Dakshineswar Temple Kolkata
The presiding deity of the temple is
Bhavatarini, an aspect of Kali, literally meaning, 'She who takes
Her devotees across the ocean of existence'.
Built in 1847 by Rani Rasmoni, it is 20 km north of Kolkata city,
situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River. Sri Ramkrishna
Paramahanca, the renowned spiritual personality has worshipped here.
The temple compound contains a large courtyard surrounding the
temple, with rooms along the boundary walls. There are twelve
shrines dedicated to the aspects of Shiva, Kali's companion, along a
temple to Radha-Krishna, a bathing ghat on the river, a bookshop, a
shrine to Rani Rashmoni, and a parking lot. |

The tower of the Jain Temple can be seen
as soon as one enters Raja Dinendra Street. The temple is accessible

Zoological Garden Kolkata
Kolkata's interesting zoo was the
creation of Sir Richard Carnac, who was Governor of Bengal. The zoo
was inaugurated by the Prince of Wales. This 16 hectare ground
houses a wide species of animals & birds including the rare
white Bengal Tiger. There is a separate reptile house and a
children's zoo. Migratory birds find sanctuary on a small lake in
the zoo every winter. The aquarium in front of the Zoological
Gardens contains sea-fishes of rare varieties. |

This 165 feet high monument was erected
by public subscription in 1828 to honour Sir David Ochter Lony.
Later on, it was renamed 'Saheed Minar' to honour the martyrs of the

Shakti Peethas. The name Calcutta is said to have been derived from
